Christians Associated for Relationships with Eastern Europe
Welcome to the CAREE (Christians Associated for Relationships with Eastern Europe) website.
CAREE is an ecumenical organization which has pursued peace, justice, and reconciliation in and for Eastern Europe for more than forty years. During that history, CAREE has worked with and for Eastern European churches, Christians, people of other faiths, and those with no faith allegiance.
CAREE’s mission includes providing and disseminating insightful and accurate information about Eastern Europe and the role religion has played and continues to play in the region through publications and conferences.
Our journal, Religion in Eastern Europe, is the only major English-language publication in its field. Appearing in six issues per year, it publishes studies by scholars and religious leaders from North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe on a wide range of questions focused on the role played by religion in Eastern Europe. CAREE members receive the journal with their paid membership. Libraries in educational institutions and churches in North America and Western Europe can subscribe to Religion in Eastern Europe. CAREE sends the journal gratis to all religious training institutions in Eastern Europe.
A newsletter, CAREE Communicator, is sent to CAREE members three times each year. It includes information on members’ activities, upcoming conferences, reports on religious developments in Eastern Europe, and comments on books and articles dealing with religion in Eastern Europe which have recently appeared.
CAREE also sponsors at least one conference each year. These conferences often are coordinated with the Europe Forum of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and Church World Service (which brings together representatives from North American churches whose oversight responsibilities include Eastern Europe). Conferences offer scholarly papers and analyses, reports on developments in the region, and discussions about possible service opportunities in the future.
Membership in CAREE is open to all those who can endorse our mission statement. Members of CAREE include scholars, church and religious leaders, expatriates from the region, people who have worked or travelled in the region, and others who have an interest in the area. Membership dues are paid annually. A special membership rate is open to those who are retired from active employment. Graduate students in North American universities who are studying in any field related to Eastern Europe, and graduate students from Eastern Europe who are studying in North American universities, can receive a complimentary student membership for the duration of their graduate studies.
